About Beniano
Beniano is a native cacao from the Beni region of northern Bolivia, one of the most biodiverse parts of the Amazon. Here cacao grows in natural forest stands known as chocolatales: forest islands that are surrounded by seasonally flooded land during the rainy season.
Unlike most commercial cacao, Beniano is not grown on plantations. It is traditionally harvested from wild trees growing in the Amazon forest. Indigenous families and local communities gather the pods by hand, then ferment and dry the beans right where they grow.
Beniano has a very particular terroir: tropical humidity, plenty of water, seasonal floods, alluvial soils and forest ecosystems full of life.
