About Patli

Patli comes from Alta Verapaz, one of the most important historical cacao regions of Guatemala. The area has a very humid tropical climate, abundant rain, limestone soils, rivers and forest ecosystems, and cacao is traditionally grown here in agroforestry gardens.

This is the land of the Q'eqchi' Maya, for whom cacao is far more than a crop. Ethnobotanical research in Alta Verapaz has documented an ancient growing system in which cacao, vanilla and achiote were cultivated together, just like this beautiful Criollo today.

Ceremonial cacao from Guatemala

Guatemala is one of the homelands of cacao culture. The Maya have prepared and shared cacao for thousands of years, and many of today's ceremonial cacaos are still made by Maya farming families, in regions such as Alta Verapaz and the highlands around Lake Atitlán.
